The River to Oak Street
North Michigan Avenue, from the Chicago River up to Oak Street, is the city's big-name shopping street. It runs through the edges of River North, Streeterville and the Gold Coast: brand flagships at street level, three vertical malls stacked around atriums, and at the top, one short block of Oak Street where the luxury houses and fine jewelers sit side by side. This route walks it south to north, then turns west onto Oak, and works best as a long afternoon. Street-level stores mostly open at 10am and close at 7 or 8pm, Monday to Saturday, with shorter Sundays; the vertical malls keep 11am to 7pm.
The River End: Apple, Tribune Tower and North Bridge
Start at Apple Michigan Avenue (401 N Michigan Ave), the riverfront store whose glass walls and stepped steel roof run down toward the water; it offers Vision Pro demos, the Genius Bar and free Today at Apple sessions. Next door in Tribune Tower, A. Lange & Söhne (435 N Michigan Ave, Suite 108A) is the Saxon watchmaker's first Midwest boutique; appointments can be booked online, and it opens at 10:30am.

Half a block west on Grand Avenue, Nordstrom (55 E Grand Ave) anchors The Shops at North Bridge across four levels; the mall's leasing team calls it the top-performing Nordstrom. The mall spreads across six blocks with about 50 specialty shops and 20 restaurants. North Bridge is in the middle of a makeover that started in August 2026. Interior work comes first, and by 2027 the Michigan and Grand entrances get a new glass front with a lit LED archway, plus a bar and lounge in the central atrium.
Grand to Chicago Avenue: The Flagships
Back on the avenue, Uniqlo (600 N Michigan Ave) reopened its two-level flagship here on March 27, 2026, with exclusive designs created by local artists. Charles Tyrwhitt (625 N Michigan Ave) sells the London shirtmaker's dress shirts, suits and knitwear, and Burberry (633 N Michigan Ave) fills five floors behind a black chrome, check-etched front, with a digital wall that plays runway footage. Burberry opens at 11am.
Across the street, the Starbucks Reserve Roastery (646 N Michigan Ave) is five floors of coffee, cocktails and food, and stays open until 9:30pm Friday to Sunday, so it also works as a last stop. Mango (664 N Michigan Ave) opened in December 2025 at the base of the Ritz-Carlton Residences, and the Harry Potter Shop Chicago (676 N Michigan Ave) sells a Chicago-only bear, spirit jersey, pins and mug in the store only, alongside its Butterbeer bar, and stays open until 9pm on Friday and Saturday.
North of Huron, Tiffany & Co. (730 N Michigan Ave) does engraving and watch repair on site, and Ralph Lauren (750 N Michigan Ave) is a full flagship: Purple Label, RRL, Home, made-to-measure tailoring and the RL Grill.
Chicago Avenue: Leica, the Water Tower and the Malls
Leica Store Chicago (800 N Michigan Ave) opened in April 2026 with new and pre-owned cameras, a second-floor gallery with rotating exhibitions and a coffee bar. It runs hands-on Leica Akademie workshops, and it is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday noon to 5pm. Hotel Chocolat (830 N Michigan Ave) is a good stop for boxed chocolates to take home.

At Chicago Avenue the Water Tower stands on the west side of the street. William W. Boyington designed it, it was built between 1867 and 1869 to hold a 135-foot iron standpipe for the city's water system, and it was one of the few buildings to survive the 1871 fire. The free City Gallery inside opens only while an exhibition is on, and the city listed it as closed between shows in October 2026, so check before you plan around it.
Opposite is Water Tower Place (835 N Michigan Ave), built around an eight-level atrium, where American Girl Place has its doll salon and café and the LEGO Store sells current sets for kids and adults. The mall keeps shorter hours than the street: Monday to Thursday 11am to 7pm, Friday and Saturday to 8pm, Sunday noon to 6pm.
Two blocks on, the 900 North Michigan Shops stack about 70 stores over seven levels: Bloomingdale's, a two-level Gucci, Max Mara for its camel coats, J.Crew with its Collection line and suiting, and L'Agence. Ask the concierge for the VIP Visitor booklet of shopping offers if you are from out of town. Just north, Louis Vuitton (919 N Michigan Ave) carries leather goods, handbags and accessories and will hold online orders for pickup.
Oak Street: One Block of Luxury
Turn left onto Oak Street. At the Michigan Avenue end, Razny Jewelers (109 E Oak St) is an official Rolex dealer and Chicago's only authorized Patek Philippe retailer, with in-house watchmakers, and Lugano Diamonds (100 E Oak St) spreads over three levels. Heading west, Van Cleef & Arpels (63 E Oak St) is seeing clients by appointment only, so book through its site first. Bravco Beauty Boutique (43 E Oak St), family-owned for more than fifty years, is the affordable stop on the block, with a travel-size shelf of Oribe and Kérastase.
Then come the houses: Loro Piana (39 E Oak St), the cashmere house's only Chicago store; Prada (30 E Oak St), full-line for women and men; Hermès (25 E Oak St), which is closed on Sundays; and Cartier (15 E Oak St), two floors with jewelry, bridal and leather embossing. Cartier says walk-ins can face longer waits, so book ahead if you are buying.
Lunch on the Avenue
Plan lunch around where you are on the avenue. At the river end, The Purple Pig (444 N Michigan Ave) is a Mediterranean small-plates room built around cheese, pork and wine; order the grilled broccoli with anchovy vinaigrette. Just west of the avenue on Grand, Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab (60 E Grand Ave), originally from Miami, does stone crab and steaks with creamed spinach.
Further north, Aster Hall on the upper floors of 900 North Michigan is the quick option: a dozen-plus counters with Small Cheval burgers, rotisserie chicken, dumplings and sushi. Coffee is the Roastery at 646 N Michigan.
The Lights Festival
The Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is Saturday, Nov 21, 2026. Lights Festival Lane runs from 11am to 4pm with live music, free photos with Santa and family activities. The parade steps off from Oak Street and Michigan Avenue at 5:30pm and heads south down the avenue, lighting more than a million lights on 200-plus trees, with Mickey and Minnie Mouse as grand marshals. Fireworks go up over the river at Michigan Avenue at 7:30pm. Street closures start as early as 3pm, so finish the shopping early or come back another day for it. If you would rather watch from your hotel, ABC7 Chicago airs the parade on Sunday, Nov 22, from 6 to 7pm.
Red Line, Buses and Mall Garages
Ride the CTA Red Line to Grand for the south end or Chicago for the middle of the avenue, then walk two blocks east. CTA buses run the length of Michigan Avenue up to Oak Street. If you drive, the 900 North Michigan Shops and Water Tower Place both have self-parking and valet.
Plan Oak Street for a weekday or Saturday: Hermès is closed on Sundays and most of the block closes at 6pm.
