The Lake Shore Campus sits on Sheridan Road in Rogers Park, right on the lake, and the shopping closest to campus lines Sheridan itself. It is mostly food, coffee and errands, with a few good shops mixed in.

Start at the Granada Center. Third Coast Comics (6443 N Sheridan Rd) is a few doors from the campus bookstore and carries new comics for longtime fans and casual readers alike. Show your Loyola ID for 10% off.

Head west on Devon Avenue for errands. Devon Market (1440 W Devon Ave) is the grocery store students actually use, and Clark-Devon Hardware (6401 N Clark St) sits at the corner of Clark and Devon under its big clock. More on both below.

For official Loyola gear, sweatshirts and textbooks, go to the Loyola Lake Shore Campus Bookstore in the Granada Center (6435 N Sheridan Rd). Regular hours are Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm, Friday 9am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm. It is closed Sunday. Hours run longer in the weeks before May commencement, and caps, gowns and other regalia can be bought here in person or through the bookstore website.

There is a smaller outpost, the L Stop, at the north end of the Damen Student Center (6511 N Sheridan Rd). It is open weekdays 10am to 3pm and closed weekends. If you're downtown, the Water Tower Campus has its own bookstore in Baumhart Hall, 2nd floor, at 26 E Pearson St.

Devon Market (1440 W Devon Ave) is about six blocks west of campus on Devon. It has a bigger produce section than most stores near Loyola, plus Japanese snacks, European cheese and kimchi. Bring your Loyola ID: students get 10% off groceries.

Clark-Devon Hardware (6401 N Clark St) has served Rogers Park for more than a century. It stocks around 40,000 items in 12,000 square feet, from paint to sanding sponges, so it can cover most of what a new apartment needs. Closer to campus on Devon, Chicago Healthmart Pharmacy (1260 W Devon Ave) takes 10% off over-the-counter items with a student ID.

Getting around by bike? Roberts Cycle Bike Shop (7054 N Clark St) gives students 10% off accessories. For a desk plant, Gethsemane Garden Center (5739 N Clark St, open daily 9am to 4pm) is on Clark just north of Andersonville. For a real piece of furniture, District (5430 N Clark St) is a furniture store in Andersonville that posts its sale events on Instagram first.

The best browsing near Loyola is in Andersonville, a few Red Line stops south. Its N Clark St strip runs from Foster Ave to Bryn Mawr Ave and is full of independents.

For thrift, Buffalo Exchange (5252 N Clark St, daily 11am to 8pm) buys, sells and trades used and vintage clothes, so bring a bag of clothes to sell. The Brown Elephant (5404 N Clark St, daily 11am to 7pm) is Howard Brown Health's resale shop for clothes, lamps, books and decor. Closer to home, Broadway Antique Market (6130 N Broadway) in Edgewater is a large multi-dealer antique store. Its owners put it up for sale this summer and say it stays open through the winter holidays, so go soon.

For books and records, Women & Children First (5233 N Clark St) is a feminist bookstore with readings and author events. Rattleback Records (5405 N Clark St) sells new and used LPs, 45s, CDs and cassettes, and AlleyCat Comics (5304 N Clark St, rear) has new comics, graphic novels and manga.

For clothes, Dearborn Denim (5202 N Clark St) sells Chicago-made jeans and hems them to length in the shop.

Official Loyola gear from the campus bookstore is the obvious gift. Beyond that:

  • Transit Tees (5226 N Clark St): T-shirts and gifts made from CTA maps, street signs and city flags. It is an official licensed CTA maker.
  • Andersonville Galleria (5247 N Clark St): more than 200 local makers under one roof, open daily from 11am.
  • Paper & Pencil (5208 N Clark St): good pens and journals for a graduate. In person only, and cashless.
  • Strange Cargo (5216 N Clark St) and RAYGUN (5207 N Clark St): Chicago-themed T-shirts for parents to take home.
  • ENJOY, An Urban General Store (5307 N Clark St): cards, books, home and office goods, and small gifts.

Right by the bookstore, Eggs with Benefits (6441 N Sheridan Rd) is a Korean-inspired breakfast spot started by a Loyola alum that also sells tacos. J.B. Alberto's (1326 W Morse Ave) is a longtime neighborhood pizza place that sells slices. Honeybear (7036 N Clark St) is a colorful brunch spot. In Edgewater, Sam's Chicken & Ribs (1102 W Granville Ave) does ribs, fried chicken and gyros and takes 10% off with ID, and Metropolis Coffee Company (1039 W Granville Ave) roasts its own coffee. In warm months, the Waterfront Cafe (6219 N Sheridan Rd) has a patio facing the lake.

When you're shopping Andersonville, stop at Lost Larson (5318 N Clark St) for a cardamom bun, Svea (5236 N Clark St) for Swedish pancakes, or Little Bad Wolf (1541 W Bryn Mawr Ave) for a burger.

The CTA Red Line's Loyola stop is the main way in: get off and cross Sheridan Road onto campus. Full-time students get a U-Pass for unlimited CTA rides during most terms. Buses near campus include the #147 Outer Drive Express, #151 Sheridan, #36 Broadway, #136 Sheridan/Skokie Valley and #155 Devon.

For Andersonville, ride the Red Line south to Berwyn or Bryn Mawr and walk west to Clark Street. For the Loop, stay on the Red Line; it runs under State Street with stops at Lake and Monroe. Lincoln Park's Armitage Avenue shops sit by the Brown and Purple Line Armitage station. Loyola's free intercampus shuttle runs weekdays in fall and spring, every 20 to 30 minutes, to the Water Tower Campus near Michigan Avenue.

Driving? Visitors pay to park: $8 in the Main Parking Structure and $5 in the Fordham Garage. Pay at the stations or the Parking Office on the first floor of the Main Parking Structure. Garages close at 2am, and overnight parking needs written approval.
