UChicago is an urban campus, and everything in this guide up to the closing section is a walk from the quads. Hyde Park has three shopping streets, each a few blocks apart: 57th Street on the north edge of campus, 55th Street two blocks up, and 53rd Street with Harper Court two blocks past that.
57th Street is book country and the closest. Seminary Co-op Bookstore (5751 S Woodlawn Ave) is the co-op's flagship, deep in philosophy, politics and the social sciences. East on 57th, 57th Street Books (1301 E 57th St) is its sister store, Powell's Bookstore (1501 E 57th St) sells used books, and 57th Street Wines (1448 E 57th St) is in the same stretch.
55th Street runs past the Hyde Park Shopping Center, home to Trader Joe's (1528 E 55th St) and Barnes & Noble (1524 E 55th St), which opened in March 2026 in the old Treasure Island Foods space. Next door, *play (1502 E 55th St) sells toys and games for screen-free play. Further east are First Aid Comics (1617 E 55th St), GILDA Designer Thrift Boutique (1746 E 55th St), Fiber Friends Studios (1744 E 55th St) and Hyde Park Florist (1748 E 55th St).
53rd Street is the main retail strip, and Harper Court and Harper Avenue branch off it. Walk it west to east: Kayra Imports (1001 E 53rd St) for African clothing, fabrics and shea butter, Kilimanjaro International (1305 E 53rd St) for African art and goods, Stamp'lays Boutique (1371 E 53rd St), Hyde Park Records (1377 E 53rd St), and The Silver Room (1506 E 53rd St). Around the corner on Harper are StockBoy (5239 S Harper Ave), Fashion Geek (5241 S Harper Ave), Suuri Design (5225 S Harper Ct) and Recycled Modern (5231 S Harper Ct).
For official UChicago gear, go to the University of Chicago Bookstore (970 E 58th St), west of Levi Hall and the Main Quadrangle. Follett runs it for the university; it took over from Barnes & Noble in 2024. Beyond textbooks, it carries general reading, school supplies, electronics, dorm essentials from IKEA, and UChicago apparel and gifts. A remodel finished with a grand reopening on April 30, 2026, adding higher-end apparel, Bath and Body Works beauty products, more gifts and an adjacent cafe. The store says a collegiate varsity jacket has become a bestseller.
During Convocation Weekend the store stocks gear and gifts for alumni and guests. The university doesn't post regular hours online, so call ahead.
Start at the campus store, which stocks IKEA dorm essentials. For the big move-in run of towels, storage, cleaning supplies and snacks, Target (1346 E 53rd St) is on the 53rd Street strip. Office Depot (5420 S Lake Park Ave) covers printer paper, desk lamps and binders, and The UPS Store (1507 E 53rd St) handles shipping boxes home.
Groceries: Trader Joe's (1528 E 55th St) is open 9am to 9pm daily. Open Produce (1635 E 55th St) is a small market a block east, and the Hyde Park Farmers Market sets up at 1511 E 53rd St in season. For apartment decor with more character, Recycled Modern sells interior goods and art from Black Chicago artists and craftspeople. Pet owners have A Paw Place (1457 E 53rd St) for cat and dog food and supplies. Toiletries are at Ulta Beauty (5228 S Lake Park Ave) and the Walgreens at 1554 E 55th St.
Books. Students crawl 57th Street: the Co-op, 57th Street Books and Powell's are all within a few blocks. Call and Response Books (1390 E Hyde Park Blvd) focuses on Black, brown and Indigenous authors and hosts a small concert series. First Aid Comics has new issues and graphic novels, and the Barnes & Noble on 55th has a cafe for studying.
Vintage and records. GILDA sells vintage and resale clothing for all genders plus home decor. Hyde Park Records is strongest in soul, jazz, reggae and rock.
Clothes and sneakers. StockBoy sells graphic tees and track jackets, does custom printing, and doubles as an incubator for young Chicago brands. Fashion Geek is the flagship of a Chicago streetwear label, with colorful hoodies and exclusive drops. Akira (1539 E 53rd St) is the local branch of the Chicago fashion chain, The Silver Room mixes apparel with jewelry from local designers, and Wesley's Shoe Corral (1506 E 55th St) sells shoes.

On 55th. Nella Pizza e Pasta (1125 E 55th St) holds a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand for its Neapolitan pies and house-made pasta. Morry's Deli (5500 S Cornell Ave) is at the east end, and Ascione Bistro (1500 E 55th St) sits by the shopping center.
On 53rd and Harper. Valois Restaurant (1518 E 53rd St) is a cafeteria-style breakfast spot; get pancakes or biscuits and gravy. Cheap eats line the strip: Nando's (1447 E 53rd St) for peri-peri chicken, Five Guys (1456 E 53rd St) and Pizza Capri (1501 E 53rd St). Parents' dinner. Book Virtue (1462 E 53rd St), Erick Williams's MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Southern restaurant, and order the skillet cornbread.
Metra Electric from downtown. Board at Millennium Park/Randolph or Van Buren, get off at 57th Street, and walk six blocks west on 57th to the main campus. The Metra Electric also stops at 53rd Street, handy for Harper Court.
CTA bus. The southbound #6 Jackson Park Express runs along State Street with stops between Lake Street and Congress Parkway; get off at 57th Street and Stony Island Avenue. The #55 runs along 55th Street and the #59 along 59th Street.
Parking. The university lists the Hospitals Parking Garage (5840 S Maryland Ave) on west campus and a structure at 5505 S Ellis Ave on north campus. Street parking on 53rd and 57th Streets is metered.
For chain stores Hyde Park doesn't have, head to State Street in the Loop. Ride the Metra Electric north from 57th or 53rd Street to Van Buren or Millennium Park/Randolph, or take the northbound #6 from 57th and Stony Island, which runs along State Street. Primark (35 N State St) is good for cheap basics, T.J. Maxx (11 N State St) has discounted clothing and home decor, and JD Sports (10 S State St) and Zumiez (2 S State St) cover sneakers and skate. Reckless Records (33 S Wabash Ave) is a block east, open daily 10am to 7pm. See our State Street district page for the rest.
