Insider guide
Shopping Hyde Park.
The story
Hyde Park is the University of Chicago's neighborhood on the South Side, and its shopping comes in two main runs. E 53rd St, from Kimbark Ave to Lake Park Ave, includes Harper Court and most of the clothing, gift and record shops. E 57th St, over the same stretch, is the book and wine end.
In between, E 55th St has a new Barnes & Noble, a toy store, a yarn shop and a designer thrift. Hyde Park suits readers above all. The Seminary Co-op, 57th Street Books, Powell's and Barnes & Noble are all within a few blocks, and Call and Response Books adds another stop.
A Little History
The University of Chicago was founded here in 1890 with a Rockefeller endowment, and the bookstores grew up around it. The Seminary Co-op started in 1961 in the basement of the Chicago Theological Seminary, and Powell's opened at 1501 E 57th Street in 1970.
What to Expect
On 53rd Street, Kayra Imports (1001 E 53rd St) sells African clothing and fabrics plus shea butter and black soap, and Sprocket and Stone (1013) is a pet shop. Hyde Park Records (1377) stocks vinyl and CDs, strongest in old school, soul, jazz, reggae and rock. The Silver Room (1506) carries jewelry, apparel, art and music from local designers and hosts open mics and readings, and Akira (1539) has a branch here. In Harper Court, Recycled Modern (5231 S Harper Ct) sells interior goods and art by Black Chicago artists and craftspeople. On S Harper Ave, StockBoy (5239) sells graphic tees and track jackets and doubles as an incubator for young Chicago brands, and Fashion Geek (5421) is the flagship of Alonzo "Zoe" Jackson's streetwear label.
On 55th Street, *play (1502 E 55th St) sells open-ended toys and games for screen-free play, Wesley's Shoe Corral (1506) sells shoes, and Barnes & Noble (1524) opened in March 2026 with books, toys, games, magazines and a cafe. First Aid Comics (1617) has new issues and graphic novels. Farther east, Fiber Friends Studios (1744) sells yarn and runs classes, and GILDA Designer Thrift Boutique (1746) carries vintage and resale clothing plus home decor. On 57th, 57th Street Books (1301 E 57th St) is the Seminary Co-op's basement sister store, 57th Street Wines (1448) hosts tastings and classes, and Powell's (1501) is the stop for used and out-of-print books. The Seminary Co-op flagship (5751 S Woodlawn Ave) is strong in philosophy, politics and the social sciences. Call and Response Books (1390 E Hyde Park Blvd) focuses on Black, brown and Indigenous authors.
Best Time to Visit
Bookstores open at 10 or 11am and close at 5 or 6pm. Plan around two closures. The Seminary Co-op is closed Sundays (weekdays 11am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm), and 57th Street Books is closed Mondays (Tuesday to Friday 11am to 6pm, weekends 10am to 5pm). Both also close on major holidays, including MLK Day, Juneteenth and Labor Day. 57th Street Wines runs tastings, events and classes, so check ahead if you want to time one. Most other shops post no hours, so call ahead.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at 57th Street Books (1301 E 57th St), then walk east to 57th Street Wines (1448) and Powell's (1501). Head up to 55th Street for *play (1502 E 55th St) and Barnes & Noble (1524). On a Monday, swap 57th Street Books for the Seminary Co-op (5751 S Woodlawn Ave).
