Insider guide
Shopping Mag Mile.
The story
The Magnificent Mile is North Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street. It is the city's big-name retail stretch: brand flagships at street level, luxury houses, and three vertical malls. Water Tower Place sits at Chicago Avenue, the 900 North Michigan Shops hold the Gold Coast end, and Nordstrom anchors The Shops at North Bridge off Grand Avenue.
It suits visitors and anyone who wants the major labels in one walk. Luxury runs from Burberry and Ralph Lauren to Gucci, Max Mara and Louis Vuitton at the north end. Families have the LEGO Store and American Girl Place.
A Little History
North Michigan Avenue was proposed in Daniel Burnham's 1909 Plan of Chicago and built in the 1920s, replacing old Pine Street. In the late 1940s developer Arthur Rubloff named it the Magnificent Mile and sold it as the city's most prestigious address.
Shopping went vertical on October 2, 1975, when Water Tower Place opened its eight-story atrium mall, anchored by Marshall Field's and Lord & Taylor, at the base of a 74-story tower.
What to Expect
Apple Michigan Avenue (401 N Michigan) has glass walls and a roof that steps down toward the water, plus Vision Pro demos. A. Lange & Söhne's first Midwest boutique is inside Tribune Tower at 435. Nordstrom (55 E Grand Ave) fills four levels with clothes and shoes for the family.
The 600 block is flagship row. Uniqlo (600) reopened here in March 2026 with designs by local artists made for this store. Charles Tyrwhitt (625) sells dress shirts and suits, Burberry (633) has five floors of trench coats and outerwear, and Mango (664) opened in December 2025. Nike Chicago (669) is a roughly 57,000-square-foot flagship, and the Harry Potter Shop (676) sells wands, robes and Chicago-only items next to its Butterbeer Bar. Farther north, Tiffany & Co. (730) does engraving and watch repair, Ralph Lauren (750) covers Purple Label, RRL and Polo with the RL Grill inside, and Leica (800) sells new and pre-owned cameras. Water Tower Place (835) holds the LEGO Store and American Girl Place, with its doll hair salon and cafe. The 900 North Michigan Shops have about 70 stores, including Bloomingdale's, a two-level Gucci, Max Mara, L'Agence and J.Crew. Louis Vuitton is next door at 919.
Best Time to Visit
Street-level stores mostly open at 10am and close at 7 or 8pm Monday to Saturday, with shorter Sundays. The malls keep tighter hours: Water Tower Place runs 11am–7pm Monday to Thursday, to 8pm Friday and Saturday, and noon–6pm Sunday, so do LEGO and American Girl before evening. For a later finish, Apple is open to 8pm Monday to Saturday, the Harry Potter Shop to 9pm Friday and Saturday, and the Starbucks Reserve Roastery to 9:30pm Friday to Sunday. Louis Vuitton closes at 5pm on Sunday, and A. Lange & Söhne lists no Sunday hours. Many stores don't post hours, so call ahead.
If You Only Have an Hour
Start at Burberry (633 N Michigan), then walk north to the Harry Potter Shop (676) for the Chicago-only pieces. Keep going to Tiffany & Co. (730) and Ralph Lauren (750), and finish at Water Tower Place (835) for the LEGO Store.
Where to Eat
Aster Hall, on the upper floors of the 900 North Michigan Shops, is the easy lunch: more than a dozen counters, including Small Cheval burgers, rotisserie chicken, dumplings and sushi. For a sit-down dinner, Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab (60 E Grand Ave) is just off Michigan; order the stone crab and a steak with creamed spinach. The Starbucks Reserve Roastery (646 N Michigan) has a cocktail bar and food, and needs no reservation.
