Insider guide

Shopping Oak Street.

The story

Oak Street is one short Gold Coast block of brownstones just west of Michigan Avenue, packed with luxury houses and fine jewelers. The shopping runs along E Oak St from Michigan Avenue west to State Street, and a few more boutiques sit around the corner on N Rush St.

This is the place for serious designer, jewelry and watch shopping, often by appointment. Fashion comes from Hermès, Prada, Loro Piana, Tom Ford and Dior; jewelry and watches from Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Harry Winston and Razny Jewelers. For something smaller, Bravco Beauty Boutique is on the same block.

A Little History

The luxury block of Oak Street runs between State and Rush Streets and Michigan Avenue in the Gold Coast, and at its east end the street meets Michigan Avenue and becomes East Lake Shore Drive. Because the block is so short, the luxury houses have spilled onto Rush Street and Walton Street around it.

What to Expect

The low numbers hold the big names. Cartier (15 E Oak) has two floors of jewelry, bridal, leather goods and eyewear, with repair and leather embossing. Hermès (25) sells handbags, silk scarves, shoes and home goods, and Prada (30) is a full-line store. Loro Piana (39) is the label's only Chicago store, for cashmere and wool. Bravco (43) is a family-owned beauty shop, in business for more than fifty years, with skincare, haircare and a travel-size section.

Mid-block, Harry Winston (55) has its Chicago salon, Moncler (59) carries women's and men's collections, and Van Cleef & Arpels (63) sells jewelry, engagement rings and watches. Tom Ford (66) is the brand's only Chicago store, and Dolce&Gabbana (68) stocks men's suits, corsetry and jewelry. At the east end, Lugano Diamonds (100) spreads over three levels, Akris is at 101, and Razny Jewelers (109) is a Rolex dealer and Chicago's only authorized Patek Philippe retailer. On Rush, Dior (931 N Rush) carries ready-to-wear, bags and Dior Maison, with Brunello Cucinelli (937) and Oliver Peoples eyewear (941) beside it and the SKIMS flagship at 1000 N Rush.

Best Time to Visit

Come Monday to Saturday. Most boutiques open at 10am or 11am and close at 6pm; Harry Winston, Moncler, Lugano and Prada open at 11, and Prada stays to 7pm Thursday to Saturday. On Sunday most of Oak and Rush opens only noon–5pm, Hermès is closed, and Lugano lists no Sunday hours. Cartier and Tom Ford stay to 6pm on Sunday. Book the jewelers ahead: Van Cleef & Arpels is seeing clients by appointment only, and Cartier says walk-ins can face longer waits. Hermès takes online bookings but doesn't require them.

If You Only Have an Hour

Start at Dior (931 N Rush), then turn onto Oak for Cartier (15 E Oak) and Hermès (25). Walk on to Loro Piana (39) and end at Bravco (43) for a small beauty buy.
